PIQUA, Ohio — May 30, 2003 Hartzell Propeller Inc. announced today that the FAA has expanded its privileges under its Delegated Option Authorization (DOA). The FAA only uses this designation when the company is considered highly competent in its field and has a thorough knowledge of the airworthiness regulations that apply to the certification of its products. This expansion now allows the company to approve its own design data for purposes of type, production, and airworthiness certifications for propellers used on engines producing up to 1800shp. Hartzell’s authorization was previously limited to 1500shp.
In his letter granting this expanded authority, Mr. Ronald T. Wojnar, Acting Director of the Aircraft Certification Service of the FAA wrote, “…The FAA acknowledges Hartzell’s demonstrated competence as a propeller designer and manufacturer…(and) has determined, accordingly that Hartzell should be permitted to expand the limits of its DOA.”
The company is still required to follow all of the same procedures toward certification as normal, but DOA does allow Hartzell the advantage of controlling the schedule of the required approvals which generally leads to a quicker and more efficient process. This capability enables Hartzell to provide its customers with outstanding responsiveness for new programs where certification services are required.
Hartzell Propeller Inc. is widely recognized as the leader in advanced propeller design and manufacturing technology. NASA has recognized Hartzell’s advanced design capability by naming it the exclusive propeller partner for its General Aviation Propulsion (GAP) program. The company has recently developed the next generation of propeller designs based upon innovative “blended airfoil” technology and is manufacturing these blades on revolutionary machining centers to provide mission optimized performance for its customers. Hartzell traces its beginnings in 1917 to a relationship with Orville Wright and was founded on the principal of Built on Honor – a tradition that continues today.
